Watch Movies At Home The Same Day They Hit Theaters
By Chris Weiss
Lack of the latest titles is really one of the only major downsides to movie streaming. Once they get that figured out, we’ll be laughing at the days of actually leaving the house to pick out a video.
Well, a new start-up aims to get movies well before their video/pay-per-view release–city-street bootleg early. Called Prima Cinema Inc., the company is negotiating with studios toward getting movies the same day as they’re released…in theaters. That’s right, you’d basically have your own movie theater full of the latest blockbusters.
Of course, at the prices being suggested, the audience will be super limited. The service would reportedly run $20,000. And that’s just for the equipment; the movies would run $500 a piece.
Wow, and I thought $10 tickets and $7 sodas were tough to deal with.
It’s a great idea, but at those prices it’s really not practical unless money is no object and you have a home theater that rivals an IMAX. Or you’re going to watch every movie with 75 of your closest friends.
Still, Prima expects to launch next year and projects a rosy estimate of 250,000 homes within the first five years, though that sounds a lot like negotiation-bolstering numbers-fudging if you ask me. And it’s all going to depend a lot on the studios and other voices in the industry. [via Wall Street Journal] [Photo: GSLoan]
