Looking to top the 1.8-gigapixel camera designed for the DARPA ARGUS-IS project (that’s the beauty above), the US Army is on the hunt for proposals for a 2.3-gigapixel camera. The Army will use the camera mounted aboard an aircraft or drone  for super-wide-area surveillance. Some parameters the Army have outlined for the camera are that it is smaller and lighter than other systems, consumes less power, includes infrared and captures pictures at 2 frames per second. The camera should be able to cover over 60 square miles with a 0.3-meter resolution.  And you thought the spec sheet on your new DSLR was impressive.  [Wired via Engadget]
