There’s something about a small netbook, probably the bare-bones assembly, that makes you want a fast boot time. On the go, you want a nimble device that’s ready to roll at a moment’s notice. With Ubuntu making its way into more netbooks, developer Canonical is working on faster start times. The latest version, called Karmic Koala, boots in 25 seconds, down 40 seconds from the last version. Next time around, Ubuntu’s developers are shooting for 10 seconds. There’s a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo that goes into this, such as getting the Xorg display server running faster by speeding up other components that need to be in place before hand. The point is, eventually you’ll be able to boot Ubuntu faster than you can name all the animals after which the OS has been named. [via Ars Technica]
