Toshiba Tablet Announced, Apple Punk’d

To think, all that time we were speculating about the Apple Tablet, Toshiba was quietly planning a touch screen tablet computer of its own. The no-frills JournE Touch has a 7-inch screen and runs on Windows CE Pro, bringing some basic Internet browsing and a bunch of popular Web apps, like Facebook and YouTube. But Toshiba says video is the killer, playing 800 x 480 video in a variety of codecs and feeding full-resolution video through HDMI. There’s 1 GB of storage to play with, plus a memory slot for more. As for measurements, the JournE is 0.55 inches thick and weighs a little over a pound. And unlike that rumored Apple product, the JournE will definitely be ready by Q4 this year, at least in Europe, for 250 Euros. [via Engadget]

Apple is hardly punk'd. If they wanted to spit out a traditional tablet, they would have done so years ago. If Apple does release a tablet device, it won't be a traditional tablet, it will instead redefine tablet computing and lead that market elsewhere.
Not that it matters though. Tablets have a niche user-base and I doubt that tablet computers will ever gain serious market share.
