Topeka, Kansas Changes Its Name to “Google”

Topeka, Kansas is determined to be one of the test markets for Google’s recently-announced ultra-high-speed fiber optic Internet. To show it ain’t no foolin’ around, the city’s mayor Bill Bunten issued a proclamation declaring the city’s name ‘Google’ throughout the month of March.
The change is unofficial and meant to earn a little publicity to attract Google’s attention. Note that public officials are always eager to issue such proclamations–don’t be surprised if your kindergartner is recognized by one for the first time he ties his shoes.
Apparently, Topeka isn’t that attached to its name as a similar proclamation back in 1998 changed it to “ToPikachu” in recognition of the ever-popular Pikachu. Ouch, Topeka residents. Ouch.
Let’s hope Google chooses Topeka, Kansas as a test site. Otherwise, the city will just look like a desperate wannabe-boy/girlfriend changing everything about his/her appearance and attitude just to get your attention. And then failing.
