Manufacturers of standalone vehicular navigation systems should take heed of TomTom’s new iPhone app TomTom for the iPhone. Despite the lackluster name, the app helps to save drivers time by relying on “IQ Routes technology” in which the real-world experience of other TomTom drivers serves as the basis for providing the quickest route, rather than simply using driving time. Supposedly, it can shave 35 percent off of driving times. The turn-by-turn app provides standard functions like missed-turn rerouting and map zooming. Since the app is on your iPhone 3G or 3Gs, it also provides seamless linking for things like restaurant directions and reservations. The app will run $99 and include maps for the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand and 18 languages for voice directions. A kit that includes GPS antenna, mouning hardware, speakers and hands-free calling hardware will also be available. [via Yahoo Tech]
