HP really needs to get it together when it comes to tablets. It’s not going to make a dent in iPad sales by acting completely schizo and scatter-brained. In the latest chapter of HP’s strange-but-true tablet tale, the Windows 7-based Slate has made an appearance on HP’s website. What’s so odd about that? Well, several months ago, it was reported that the Slate was dead and HP was moving on to work on other tablets with other operating systems.

Well that was fast, wasn’t it? After buying up Palm just two weeks ago, rumor has it that regardless of the fate of the Windows 7 Slate, a WebOS tablet is indeed on the way and it will be here well before the glittery ball drops in NYC. The information originally hails from an “insider at HP” consulted by Examiner.com, so take it with a shaker full of Morton’s. The timeframe given for launch of the WebOS tablet, codenamed Hurricane, is the third quarter, which would be a quick little turnaround.

HP Slate Promo 2 HP Still Planning a Windows 7 Slate

Last week, a little shock ‘n chagrin hit the tech world when the media reported that HP was no longer planning to introduce a Windows 7 tablet to market. Outside of the iPad and the defunct Microsoft Courier, the HP Slate was one of the most hyped tablets of the year. It first appeared in Steve Ballmer’s hands at CES and was the subject of a number of video spots thereafter. It seemed like HP would be announcing availability and price anytime soon, and then–POOF! The Slate was history.

HP Slate Promo 22 HP Getting Rid of Windows 7 Slate

Microsoft-based tablets are dropping faster than 250-lbers in an Iron Man competition this week. Yesterday, the Microsoft Courier bit the dust, and today TechCrunch is reporting that the Windows 7-based line of Slate tablets is joining it at the cemetery. Ironic, because the HP tablet was first seen in Steve Ballmer’s hands at CES.

HP is reportedly not content with Windows 7 as an OS for its tablets and will focus on Android tablets instead. After HP’s big Palm buy, the company will also likely work on integrating WebOS into tablets as well. So, we’ll still see the Slate, we just won’t see it in its originally announced form. HP Slate Promo 21 HP Slate Pricing and Specs Leak

Finally some solid (albeit unconfirmed) information on the upcoming HP Slate. While HP has chosen to play it coy ever since Steve Ballmer held  its tablet up back at CES, showing quick glimpses of its Slate to the tune of the same annoying song, certain sources within the company seem to have other ideas. Engadget got its hands on a leaked internal document that includes pricing information and specs on the tablet, showing a much closer look than HP’s official channels have provided.

HP Slate Promo 2 HP Releases Another Promo Video for Slate

It was bound to happen, but we really hoped it wouldn’t be this soon. People are already starting in with the term “iPad killer” (cheekily or not).

Apple released its iPad this weekend and enjoyed strong sales, but there are still a variety of things that iPad 1.0 will simply not be capable of, some of which are so glaringly obvious that we have to wonder what the hell Apple was thinking not including them.

HP is all too happy to point out exactly where its upcoming Slate excels over the iPad. Things like Flash support, not one but two video cameras (front and rear cameras), USB ports and SD memory expansion (video shows a 16 GB card) are all part of the Slate while remaining M.I.A. on the iPad. The Slate will also run Windows 7 and will provide more of a full computing experience of the iPad.

Well, Apple failed to do it. We don’t even have enough information from Dell and HP to know if they’ll accomplish it. The CrunchPad/JooJoo? You must be joking. It looks as though Samsung could be the first to offer something interesting enough in the tablet space to really whet our appetites for the class of devices that will play a bigger and bigger role in the market.

HP Slate video HP Slate Promo Video Hits Web

If you dig fast-moving videos of glossy tablets flipping through multimedia, then today is your day. Earlier, we saw Apple’s iPad commercial and HP has a similar video of its Slate in action. While we still don’t know too much about what’s under the multi-touch display, at least we get to see more of the device originally shown off by Steve Ballmer.

All we can really tell you about the Slate is about the same thing we could tell you about any Windows tablet, even if we didn’t have a name or model number. The device offers video, e-reading and Web browsing. It runs Windows 7.
