Sponsored Tweets Bring Money to Endorsers
By Jared Newman
Bring on the Twitter spam. A new tool called Sponsored Tweets is making it easy for celebrities and other persons of interest on Twitter to shill for all sorts of goods and services. It works a lot like a celebrity endorsement: Advertisers enlist Twitterers for their campaigns, paying them to Tweet about the product. These users can write the Tweet themselves and get it approved, or simply post pre-written ad copy. Users can also approach Sponsored Tweets looking for an endorsement offer. So you, the reader, know what’s real and what isn’t, Sponsored Tweets requires that an ad be marked with text such as “Ad,” “Sponsor” or “Advertisement.” But once your beloved followees start telling you about the wonders of OxyClean, can they be trusted for anything?
