Sony Wants You To Reprogram Your Droid, Although It’ll Kill You

Remember all that hype about Android being this incredible open-source platform that everybody forgot about once it was revealed that meant “only kinda open, and definitely not to the idiots we sell products to?”

Turns out Sony missed that memo: in fact, they’ve put up very clear and concise instructions on how to unlock the bootloader on select Sony phones and start modifying it to your exact specifications. They just disclaim any of the mortal harm that will almost certainly befall you if you do so.

It is great that Sony, of all companies, is doing this, but you have to love the first page of instructions, written entirely in antilawsuitese. Some of their warnings, like that you could bork your phone’s software and Sony will just point and laugh at you, are perfectly reasonable.

Now, the part where they say that the worst case scenario for unlocking the bootloader is that you might suffer personal injury, as if modded software made your phone sprout knives or start spewing tear gas, that’s a little less reasonable.

Either way, the instructions are up, and fairly easy to follow if you know what you’re doing. Modders start your engines, and show us what you’ve got.
