Setting itself up to compete with other digital streaming services like Roku and Boxee, as well as cable and satellite providers, Sony announced that MLB.TV content will be available to watch on television via the PS3. This is great news for any PS3 owners who also enjoy out-of-market MLB games.

With a $120 subscription to MLB.TV Premium and a free subscription to PlayStation Network, PS3 users will be able to stream liveĀ  HD game action onto their televisions. While blackout restrictions will bar them from watching locally and nationally televised games, MLB.TV offers game archiving after the completion of games. The subscription-based service is also available on computers, smartphones and other devices.

PS3 users will enjoy a customized interface for viewing live and archived games and will also benefit from DVR functionality such as pause, rewind and fast forward. The latter of which could be crucial in a five-hour, 14-inning, 1-to-0 match-up.

In a teaser of things to come, Peter Dille, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America said: “This is one of the biggest deals we’re bringing to the PS3, and it won’t be the last one, there’s lots of conversations going on.”

NFL content come late summer? Here’s to hoping. [via Reuters]
