Sony Prices Out Its First 3D Receiver

3D RECEIVER: Oh, you thought your 3D TV package would be complete when you coughed up the $800 premium for the 3D set and upgraded your cable package, didn’t you? Oh no, if you want to connect your 3D TV and components via an A/V receiver, you’ll need to upgrade your home theater receiver as well. In order to connect with the HDMI 1.4 connection needed for 3D, you’ll need a brand new receiver that offers it.
Sony announced four new receivers today and only one of them will support 3D. The STR-DN1010 is a 7.1-channel receiver packing 110Watts per channel that will retail for $500. It will be Sony’s most affordable receiver with HDMI 1.4 3D pass-through. The receiver also features 1080/24 p support and 7 HD connections (4 HDMI and 3 component). It’ll hit the market in June.
$500 is on the low end for receiver, but not when you have to replace a perfectly good receiver just for one function. Oh well, at least you want have to replace it again…for another couple of years until they develop a whole new, exciting technology that doesn’t work with any existing components.[Gizmodo via Slippery Brick]
