playstation network Sony Plans to Launch Its Own ITunes Competitor

Under a heavy crunch from an economy which has seen consumers cut back drastically on the hardware that Sony has concentrated nearly all its attention on, the company is searching for new ways to boost its sagging sales. And a primary answer that it’s come up with is to make a decisive move toward software, developing an online store for selling intangibles like music, movies, books and the gamut of applications that its consumer hard goods demand over the long haul. Basically, a Sony iTunes.

Sony would like to build upon the success it’s enjoyed with the Playstation Network and create a more mainstream online storefront for a diverse market of downloadable content. Little detail was offered as to what the new store will look like or when it will launch, when Sony made the announcement yesterday. However, Sony did offer that it plans to make its site more interactive than iTunes, allowing users to upload video and photos to their personal accounts, for instance.

The store is tentatively called Sony Online Service–catchy. [via Business Week]
