Sony Drops PSP Phone (Xperia Play) Commercial During the Big Game

By

Yesterday’s Super Bowl allowed advertisers to reach a record number of viewers (111 million). So perhaps it should be no surprise that Sony eschewed the convention of an event-based launch for its long-rumored, highly anticipated PlayStation phone in favor of a Super Bowl ad spot. While Sony didn’t get into the meat of the gaming phone, it did indicate that it’s on the way and that it will be called the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Sony will provide more details at the Mobile World Congress next week, so its Super Bowl ad is more like an ultra-expensive teaser video. Luckily, some specs have already leaked. The Play will feature a four-inch touchscreen, slide-out gaming controls, a 1-gig Snapdragon processor and an Adreno 205 GPU. It will run on Android 2.3 and will have a 5-MP camera with 720p video recording. It will pack 512 MB of RAM and will also bring Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and A-GPS.

Early indications are that it won’t be compatible with current generation PSP games, but we’ll have to wait to find out for sure. Check out the entertaining commercial below. [via PSPworld]
