Skype a Threat to Russia’s Security? – In Soviet Russia, Skype videoconferences you. The party of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has partnered with a lobby to draft legal safeguards against the “risks” related to Skype and other VOIP systems. The primary concern, apparently, is that Skype and many other VOIP technologies are held outside of Russia, and the ability to tamper with the data transmission could be out of Russia’s hands. Also, there’s the big concern of the Skype drunk dial, which has led to many uncomfortable mornings. Russia hopes to move on this issue now, as the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs have predicted that VOIP will account for 40% of phone calls by 2012. [via yahoo]
