Well, Apple failed to do it. We don’t even have enough information from Dell and HP to know if they’ll accomplish it. The CrunchPad/JooJoo? You must be joking. It looks as though Samsung could be the first to offer something interesting enough in the tablet space to really whet our appetites for the class of devices that will play a bigger and bigger role in the market.

Samsung envisions a device with more processing power than the slates we’ve seen thus far. Samsung’s upcoming tablet, due to be released in the second half of the year, will bring more PC-like processing power and connectivity to market. Samsung envisions being able to use the slate as a primary device, rather than a big, glorified smartphone good for browsing and multimedia. It hasn’t said exactly what will be under the hood, but an Intel Atom is one likely guess.

Emmanuele Silanesu, national product and marketing manager for Samsung Australia’s IT division said of the device: “…there is the ability for a slate-based product to become a primary device in terms of its processing power and IO. That’s where I think we could get critical mass in having a product which could become your primary device – one you could take to university and do a PowerPoint presentation on it, for example, or a device that could be taken home or to the office and docked.”

Having a tablet that could double as an actual PC for home and office use as well as a mobile computing device has definitely got us intrigued. Imagine a future where the tablet, netbook, laptop, desktop configuration is replaced with one sleek device and a series of docks and accessories. That sounds like a future we’d like to be a part of.
