Psystar’s Rebel EFI Runs Mac OS X (And More!) On Any Machine
By Jared Newman
Psystar is sort of like a gremlin: Malicious, obnoxious to some (mainly Apple) but adorable and strangely lovable to others. The company’s made a name for itself by selling Mac clones, and now it’s continuing that tradition while expanding to other operating systems as well with its new Rebel EFI software. The software is marketed as a way to run up to six operating systems using six different hard drives on one computer, but it’s defining feature is the ability to load Mac OS X Snow Leopard as one of the options. Rebel EFI costs $90 regularly, but it’s on sale now for $50,
As PC World notes, Psystar clearly states that it’s “not responsible for possible data loss due to installation or use of Rebel EFI.” Apple doesn’t take too kindly to Psystar’s activities, and there’s a trial lined up for next year. At issue is whether owning Mac OS X simply means that you’re licensing the software from Apple, or that you own the physical media as well. Apple argues the former, saying that Psystar can’t, in turn, sell its own hardware running Mac OS X. I’m not sure how the court case would affect Rebel EFI, but from the looks of the disclaimer, Psystar doesn’t, either. Buyer beware. [Psystar via PC World and The Loop]

figured that the best way to approach the installation would be to pick two systems: a relatively generic desktop PC and, on the other end of the spectrum, a notebook computer. (One word of caution: you will have to wipe out the hard drive on your system to install Rebel EFI and OS X 10.6, so you may want to back up before proceeding.)
