Psyko Audio 5.1 PC Gaming Headset System Rethink 5.1 SoundBy Chris Weiss
In a new set of gaming headphones, Psyko Audio has taken an interesting approach to sound by pulling the speakers out of the ear cups and positioning them along the headband. There are five headband-mounted speakers, in addition to a subwoofer in each ear cup. Instead of firing the sound directly into your drums, the unique speaker placement lets sound flow “to each ear in a natural way which allows everyone to enjoy true 5.1 sound.” The company calls it “audio as a weapon.”
Like so many other weapons, the 5.1 headphones don’t come cheap: $299.99. They’re available now in Canada and the U.S.
Rearranging the drivers as such seems like it would certainly deliver a more realistic version of surround sound than traditional headphones. According to Dvice’s Kevin Hall: “”…during a Call of Duty 4 demo, the sound had some amazing depth with distant artillery booms muddled as they should be, and nearby gunshots crisp and present. There was also a very clear direction in my mind from where each sound came, seemingly more so than I get with the surround-sound headphones I currently use.” Sounds promising. [via Dvice]
