Pentagon Looking a Little Closer at Facebook, MySpace and Twitter

In an attempt to head off the furious flurry of tweets from our enemies abroad, the Pentagon is currently reviewing security risks associated with social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. The review includes both risks and benefits such as using the tools for recruitment, pr and communications. The report is due on Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn’s desk by month end and official policy should follow by the end of September. In a related move that should leave us all scratching our heads, the Marine Corp banned access for such sites from the Marine network. Really Marines? It’s taken this long to do that? Have the Marines been tweeting about their daily activities and updating their Facebook page for the past few years? Most jobs I’ve worked banned access to such sites a long time ago. One would think the Marines would have been first on that bandwagon. [via AP]
