One of the big question marks surrounding the surge in 3D technology at this year’s CES was just how much it would cost. Manufacturers were eager to show off their 3D displays and speak about general availability, but prices remained under wraps. Panasonic came out with Japanese pricing for one of its upcoming 3D TVs today, giving us a glimpse at how much its new technology will cost.

The televisions priced out are the VIERA TH-P54VT and TH-P50VT2, which are both full HD plasma screens with full 3D capability (with Active Shutter glasses). The televisions feature Viera link, web connectivity, 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 4 HDMI ports and 16cm×4cm×2cm speakers with built-in subwoofer. The 54-inch TH-P54VT will cost $5,900 and the 50-inch TH-P50VT2 will cost $4,800. Both sets go on sale in Japan on April 23.

Compared to similar non-HD sets also priced today, 3D adds about 800 bills to the total cost.

There was no pricing or availability information released for other markets.

Any plans to pay $800 (or whatever it actually costs once it comes to your market) for the bump up to 3D? [via CrunchGear]

Way too much money for a feature that is not standardized. On top of that Panasonic's new reputation for decreasing black levels and lack of taking responsibility.
