maemo Nokia N900 Taps Linux for Maemo 5 OS

Despite fading from relevance somewhat in the age of the iPhone, Android and Palm Pre, Nokia’s coming back firing with its Linux-based Maemo 5 mobile operating system. And in the Nokia N900 smartphone, it actually looks pretty good. The Maemo 5 lets you keep “dozens of application windows open” — an obvious swipe at the iPhone’s limited multitasking abilities — and has both a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard. It looks a little on the thick side, but I like the 1GB of application memory, OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration, 5-megapixel camera and 32 GB of built-in storage, plus a microSD slot for up to 24 GB more. It’ll hit select markets in October at an unsubsidized price of 500 Euros, or $714, but not specifics on regions or release dates. [via Nokia]
