Nokia Files New Patent Suit Against Apple
By Chris Weiss
The grand patent tit-for-tat between Nokia and Apple continues. Nokia filed a brand new patent lawsuit today, going for Apple’s jugular: the iPad. The lawsuit was filed in a Wisconsin federal district court and concerns five individual patents allegedly infringed upon by the iPhone and iPad 3G.
According to Nokia: “The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices. These patented innovations are important to Nokia’s success as they allow improved product performance and design.”
In case you haven’t been watching or think that patent lawsuits are as boring as watching mud dry, Apple and Nokia have been tied in an ongoing legal battle since last fall with suits and countersuits being thrown down faster than pennies in the ‘Take One’ tray. The saga began in October when Nokia filed its first suit claiming patent infringement on 10 separate patents. More recently, Apple asked the International Trade Commission to block Nokia imports because of its claimed patent infringements. Fun stuff.
Ars Technica reports that the lawsuits are unlikely to be heard before 2012. How many more Apple/Nokia lawsuits and countersuits do you think we’ll rack up by then? [via Nokia and Ars Technica]
