Nokia Adds Free Turn-By-Turn Navigation To Smartphones
By Chris WeissBack when the Droid was all the latest rage and Android 2.0 was dropping, Google made some headlines when it added free turn-by-turn navigation to phones featuring the OS (and later expanded it to Android 1.6 +). Nokia has officially raised the bet.
Nokia made its new Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn available to 10 of its smartphones. The maps application is a free download.
Unlike Google’s service, which is limited to the U.S., Ovi Maps is a global affair, available in 74 countries and 46 different languages. According to the company, the new feature could reach 20 million handsets worldwide.
Features included with Ovi Maps include driving directions, real-time traffic information, automatic rerouting, directions for foot travel, free maps and updates, and Lonely Planet guides.
Newly ordained Nokia GPS navigators are as follows: 5230, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 NavigationEdition, 6710 Navigator, 6730 classic E52, E55, E72, N97 mini and X6. [Nokia via Dvice]
