Tired of paying tens and hundreds of dollars on cell phone bills and overages every month? magicJack has the ultimate solution, albeit the ultimate solution that requires you to turn into a shut-in recluse.

Known for its TV-advertised, over-the-Internet home phone device that allows you to place home phone calls for free, the company has introduced a similar cellular solution for CES. The new device provides free cell phone calls in the home for a period of one year. It’s designed for calls in U.S. and Canadian markets.

Manufactured by YMax Corporation, the magicJack is a small, wireless device that plugs into your broadband-connected computer. It automatically detects and connects with nearby cell phones. The magicJack will route the calls over the Internet rather than via a local cell phone tower, so users can eschew the cellular network (and accompanying minutes/ fees) and enjoy free Internet calling. International call fees are handled by Magic Jack rather than the provider.

The device will work with any GSM phone.

According to the company, the device is legal because wireless licensing doesn’t extend inside of the home. We have a feeling a few providers might like to challenge that assertion.

The new Magic Jack will hit market later this year for a retail of $40. With more and more cell phone users cutting out home phone service and using cell phones in the home, this could prove to be a useful way of saving money. Up until the lawsuits roll in. [via ABC News]
