New WiGig Format to Offer Wireless Speeds 10x Current Rate
May 10, 2010 - By Chris Weiss
The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) has announced its new wireless spec will offer much better performance than current technology with speeds up to 10 times as fast as those enjoyed today. The WiGig format will complement existing Wi-Fi bands offering a smaller range, but speeds up to 7 Gbps. The WiGig spec will use part of the 60 GHz spectrum.
The Wi-Fi Alliance has signed off on the spec and will help WiGig promote it. The two groups envision WiGig replacing hard-wiring and offering streaming of HD video and audio.
WiGig is expected to hit the scene in no less than two years. The two aforementioned groups will be busy touting the new technology and trying to get manufacturers to build it into new devices. [via LA Times]
