Netflix Scores Exclusive Deal For Relativity Movies

It’s not quite Paramount or Universal, but movie studio Relativity has signed an exclusive content deal with Netflix that will help the latter to position itself against paid TV. The deal gives Netflix dibs on streaming Relativity movies a few months after they go onto DVD, a time period that’s usually reserved for pay TV services like HBO and Showtime. It  helps to freshen up Netflix’s content, which is generally limited to older titles.  On Relativity’s end, the deal provides a means for the smaller studio to compete with larger studios, which dominate the paid TV scene. If the deal works out, it could change the way that movie studios do business.

I wasn’t that familiar with Relativity, so I took a closer look. They’ve done such films as 3:10 to Yuma and The Strangers. Upcoming releases include Fighter with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.

It will be interesting to watch this deal and see if there are any others behind it. Newer movies would help to make Netflix streaming even more attractive than it already is. [The Wrap via VentureBeat]
