NBA Beats NFL and MLB to Hit 1 Million on Twitter

While the NBA is usually considered a third or fourth-tier sports league here in the US, it has officially become the first league to surpass the one-million-followers mark on Twitter. According to trackingtwitter.com, the official NBA Twitter page twitter.com/nba is the second-highest-ranked “brand” on Twitter. NBA’s Twitter includes tune-in for national games, score updates, video highlights, plays, news, and facts and trivia. In addition to the official NBA page, all teams have their own Twitter and many individual players also Twitter–most notably Shaq whose Twitter notoriety seems to be rising in direct proportion to his diminishing skills and fading NBA career.

Luckily for the NBA, the rise of Twitter has come at a time when basketball is interesting again. Things like complete Western Conference domination and boring perennial champions like the San Antonio Spurs are in the rear view, replaced by fierce inter-Conference competition pitting rising superstars Lebron James and Dwight Howard against proven forces like Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant. We’ll see how long it takes more popular leagues like the NFL and MLB to catch up. [via NBA.com]
