Motorola Aligns With Microsoft for Bing Search on China Android Handsets
By Chris Weiss
Motorola announced that it has made a deal with Microsoft to offer Bing and Maps on its Chinese Android handsets. The deal will commence during this financial quarter through preload and over-the-air updates. Chinese consumers will now get a Bing bookmark on their browser and a search widget with Bing integration. Looks like China will get to “Bing and decide” whether it wants to or not.
Wow, losing default search on phones powered by your operating system to your biggest competitor is kind of like a Motorola employee buying a cheesesteak from Geno’s and sitting down in Pat’s to eat it. That’s pretty harsh. Sure, Google certainly knew it was coming after its issues in China. But Bing? Ouch. To make that sting just a little worse, the announcement also mentions that the alliance is global, so we might see it right here in Google’s backyard. [PR Newswire via Engadget]
