Meet the Drill-Powered 19mph Trike

Meet the EX. As it was created by a German, Nils Ferber, the EX stands for “eccentricity”, which he thought was “excentricity”. Silly Germans! Anyway, he’s an engineer, not a linguist, so what’s so interesting about this trike, aside from the design?

Well, it can go 19 mph, for one thing. You might be wondering what magic power plant can get that kind of speed on a frame like that, and the answer would be…two electric drills.

This was built from the ground up to be a new kind of driving experience, and it’s actually a fairly neat idea. This is just a prototype, with parts cut out by CNC machine, but production would apparently be fairly cheap and all you need are two drills and some spare batteries.

You steer by using a special spine-like joint designed especially for this project, attached to the back wheel. The joint senses where you’re shifting your weight, and you turn accordingly. Ferber offers no idea how efficient this is at full speed, but we would imagine it’s fun to do.

There’s no current plans to put this into production, which should really be changed immediately, because we’d drive one of these things. Visit Ferber’s official site on this project to see more details and maybe harrass him into making you one.
