Make Any Impact Sound With This Handy Portable Kit
By danseitz
Is this a collection of fans? Cooking tools? Kinky implements? None of the above! It’s a neatly designed tool for filmmaking. No, seriously!
We usually highlight audio gadgets with wires and circuit boards and other fancy stuff like that, but this collection was just too good to pass up. Designed by Chiara Onida, it’s designed to be a portable foley sound kit to imitate every possible kind of impact used in films. Foley is the term for incidental sounds that filmmaking technology is unable to pick up effectively; film sound recording privileges dialogue over walking on a carpet because faking walking on a carpet is a lot easier and cheaper. Each tool is custom-designed and hand-built, and it rolls up into a bundle for simple transport, meaning you’ve got all the impact sounds you need over your shoulder.
Yep, from door closings to getting smacked around, if it’s a film sound effect, there’s a tool for it sitting within this canvas roll. What’s neat is how Oneida, a London-based industrial designer by trade, spent serious time researching exactly what foley artists needed and then even more time assembling each tool to make that specific sound.
No word on when you can get one, but you can learn more about it at Onida’s website.
