Cell IPhone Tops the List of Most Popular Phones, Apple Loses To LG/RIM

A recent Nielson list of the top 10 U.S. mobile phones being used in 2009 shows that the iPhone comes in number 1 with 4 percent of the overall market. However, Apple fails to take a company-wide lead because of the limitation of only offering one phone. Both LG and Research in Motion (RIM) beat Apple in overall company market share with 6.4 percent and 6.3 percent respectively. The numbers were taken between January and October 2009.

Other top phones include the Blackberry 8300 series with 3.7 percent, the Motorola Razr series with 2.3 percent, the LG enV2 with 2.1 percent and the LG Voyager with 1.7 percent. Going down just a few notches, it’s clear what a small market share even the top phones take, showing that there are no dominating phones on the market–the top 10 make up little more than 20 percent of overall cell phones.

2010 promises to be another big year for new smartphones and it will be interesting to see how this list changes over the next year. Will the iPhone continue to hold #1? Will the Motorola Droid show up to the party? The Nexus One? Another unnamed phone hovering in some manufacturer’s R&D lab as we speak? [Nielson via CNET] [Photo: kalleboo]
