IPhone (and iPad) Now Capable of VoIP

Apple released an update for the iPhone’s software development kit yesterday that will enable app builders to offer VoIP services. IPhone users will now be able to make Internet phone calls over the 3G network. Prior to this update, iPhones were unable to utilize 3G networks for VoIP.

VoIP company ICall has already added 3G support to its iPhone app via an update.

It looks like Google Voice for the iPhone will continue hanging in limbo. The new software update will not affect the previously rejected service. Google spokesman stated: “We haven’t heard any updates regarding our native app for the iPhone.” Earlier this week, Google launched a web version of Voice for the iPhone.

The just-announced iPad will also benefit from the new update when it launches in April. Not all iPads will contain 3G, however, and those that do will cost extra. [via Wired]
