HP Will Buy Palm for $1.2 Billion
By Chris Weiss
After rumors indicating that Lenovo was looking closely at Palm, HP emerged earlier today as the company that will buy the struggling Palm. The $1.2 billion deal is scheduled to close by the end of July. HP announced the move and indicated that it plans to capitalize on Palm’s WebOS technology for use in a variety of mobile gadgets including mobile phones, netbooks and tablets. HP is scheduled to launch a tablet called the Slate to compete with the iPad.
HP explained that it has more resources to take Palm’s technology to the next level. Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein will stay on at HP and continue to direct Palm’s operations.
Todd Bradley, an executive vice president at HP, summed it up with some hollow marketing speak: “”Today’s announcement is about how HP will provide customers with a great experience as they increasingly live their lives online, for work, entertainment and everything in between.” [via Silicon Valley Mercury News and Engadget]
