HP Drops New Line of Plug-And-Play Printers
By Chris Weiss
Wow, this one sounds like something that HP should have introduced years ago. Perhaps the company is just full of sadists that like to see the non-technical-minded squirm, but this is so simple and helpful, it seems like it should have been around in the 90′s. What I refer to with a mixture of love and contempt is the new line of HP laser printers with Smart Install Technology.
Instead of requiring a lousy disc for installation, the technology allows the printer to work like pretty much every other device in your electronics arsenal: plug it in, connect it to your component (computer) and let it do it’s thing. The necessary software and drivers are transferred via the same USB connection that you’d use to connect your computer with anyway. And isn’t that exactly the way you’ve always wished a printer would work?
Printers in the line include the Pro P1100, the LaserJet Pro M1130/M1210 and the LaserJet Pro P1566/P1606dn.
Not three days ago, I attempted to print something from a new laptop, only to get the ol’ “Insert disc and install” message. Only I haven’t known where the disc is in months. Next time, I’m getting one of these. [via Slippery Brick]
