Google Nexus One Gets Multitouch With Update

Today is just full of mobile updates across the board. We already talked a little about the iPhone and WinMo updates, and now Google has updated the Nexus One. Perhaps the most notable update of the day, the Nexus One is now capable of multitouch thanks to the over-the-air update announced today. Nexus One users will now be able to enjoy pinch-to-zoom function in the browser, gallery and maps applications.

The update also addresses poor 3G service that has been at the heart of some complaints on the Nexus One. According to Google: “We will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones.” That doesn’t exactly sound like the widescale, across-the-board solution that customers are clamoring for, but at least it’s something.

The update will also bring Google Maps 3.4, which will offer a few new features. Among them is a Night Mode in Google Maps Navigation, which automatically changes the screen to optimize it for nighttime viewing. Google Goggles will also be offered in the update.

Users will receive a message and need only download to begin updating. It will be rolled out gradually during this week. [Nexus One via MobileCrunch]
