Google Next Move: DNS

In its eternal quest for complete and utter world domination to make the Internet faster, Google has entered the DNS game. For those that don’t want to know more about the Internet than where to find the hottest Olivia Wilde pictures, prepare to be bored.
DNS stands for Domain Name System and it’s basically the behind-the-scenes work that is done to transform those fun, easy-to-type website names into the complex string of numbers (IP address) needed to guide you to the actual site. Ordinarily, DNS is handled by the Internet Service Provider, but Google will now offer its own DNS called Google Public DNS. Internet users can choose to use Google’s system as opposed to the one provided by their ISP. For those interested, Google gives some instruction here.

And of course, Google can make a little more money and become even further ingrained into your life at the same time. [via Google Blog and Bits] [Photo: Seattle Municipal Archives]
