Update– Gmail is live again for some, according to commenters below and our own tests.

Gmail is down for the count. Google’s web mail service went down on Tuesday afternoon, September 1st, after intermittent service throughout the morning and a noted “service disruption” on the 31st of August. 2286 tweets and counting have discussed the outage of Google Mail, with many more on the horizon as web users struggle with an inaccessible mail service. For those of you heading to google and typing the phrase “gmail down”, leave a comment below and let us know when you begin to receive service from gmail. We’re gmail users as well!

Update – Google Chat is still operable, can be accessed if you’re using a third party IM client like Pidgin, as it is obviously inaccessible from your Gmail account.

nothing yet. been trying for 35 mins now…very annoyed with this. use gmail for work, guess i should switch to more reliable e-mail service. this just can't happen anymore. are we living in 1990's e-mail technology? i expect no errors whatsoever with a service like gmail.

Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 1.2 hours. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.

i have called 20 different emergency service crews because i believed it is my connection. now there is 45 people in front of my hosue, waiting for payment. GOOGLEMAIL is not for free! this is costing me tons, maybe even millions. i have a 2 people company running out of my mansions, we are connected through msn – so why do i even bother?

Since the entire google system is free and better than anything else out there. I think can deal with it being down a little. Been using for over a year and this is my first issue. Not bad in my opinion.

Gmail is down in Baltimore MD USA but I can recieve, read and send e-mails through my igoogle page which has a gmail sub window. Google chat even works through that as well.

get ahold of yourselves. this kind of thing happens with any technology, old or not.

pull out your google cartridge and blow on it a little, maybe that will help.

stuff breaks sometimes. it's not fun, but it's unavoidable. deal.

Down in Los Angeles. As for Google's "track record", Eric, They may be up a lot, but service has been disrupted a few times, sometimes for "oops's" and other times because they are such a tasty target for packet kiddies. Hurry up and get your sh*t together, Google. Over an hour of downtime is pretty unacceptable, especially in the middle of business hours PST, where you are located.
