FCC Considers Offering Free Wireless Broadband
By Chris Weiss
Reuters reports today that regulators within the FCC are currently contemplating setting aside a dedicated amount of the wireless spectrum for free or low-cost wireless broadband. The effort is a portion of the National Broadband Plan, which will be detailed next week, and aims to deliver broadband to more people within the country. More details on the free wireless suggestions will be presented within the plan itself. It’s not currently known who would be eligible for free service or how it would be dispatched.
Free wireless broadband is definitely one way to get more people interested and active in high-speed Internet. I’d love to be able to tap into mobile broadband without having to pay exhorbitant data prices. Hopefully, we’ll hear a little more about this aspect of the broadband plan next week.
