It’s no secret that digital music sales have been rapidly growing at the detriment of traditional media like CD’s and new numbers provided by the market research firm NPD Group show just how far this trend has gone. Digital sales in the U.S. have grown from 20% of all sales in 2007 to 35% this year. Music sold through the iTunes Store alone accounted for a quarter of all music sold and 69% of digital sales. That latter figure is quite impressive considering that Amazon MP3 came in second with just 8%. While CD sales still handily surpassed digital music with 65% of all sales, it’s expected that digital will catch up as early as the end of next year, with CD sales continuing to drop and digital showing steady growth.
