Comcast Rolls Out WiMax in Portland

Good news for people who live in Portland: 4G broadband is coming on Tuesday. Comcast will be the carrier of WiMax, a type of wireless Internet that’s faster than traditional Wi-Fi, and with a longer range. While Wi-Fi requires the user to settle down near a hot spot, WiMax works citywide, with speeds reaching 4 Megabits per second. Cable companies are jumping on board with this technology as Clearwire, which created the 4G network, expands throughout the country. Along with other cable operators, Clearwire plans to offer the service in Las Vegas, Chicago, Charlotte, N.C., Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle this year. Not to be outdone, phone companies are betting on a similar technology, called LTE, that should come into play next year. The bottom line is that getting Internet outside of home won’t be so complicated before long. Pricing for home Internet and mobile WiMax is $72.95 per month in Portland, but there’s a special monthly rate of $49.95 for a year if you act now. [via the Associated Press]

It's going to take time before the network is solid at every location. Nine states here in the
USA so far and I'm happy to be living in one of them.
