Charles Bolden named NASA Head – Former Astronaut Charles Bolden will take the reigns as NASA’s new administrator, the 12th head of the National Air and Space Administration since its’ 1958 birth. Mr. Bolden was confirmed by an unanimous vote in the Senate today after President Obama’s initial nomination on May 23rd. Charles Bolden spent 14 years with NASA as an astronaut, including four space missions about space shuttles Columbia, Atlantis and Discovery– including two as the mission’s commander. Bolden also brings an extensive military career both before and after his career with NASA, and is expected to bring a renewed focus on innovation to an otherwise costly department of the U.S. government. Mr. Bolden will have an uphill battle ahead of him amidst a difficult recession, where managing the demands of the world of science will be difficult given a tough, restrained departmental budget.
