Cell Phone Cameras To Get Huge Boost from Quantum Tech
By Chris Weiss
While one of the more convenient lifestyle additions of the past 10 years, cell phone cameras aren’t exactly known for offering quality pictures. Sure, they may provide an excellent service in letting you take a photo that you would have otherwise missed, but chances are pretty good you’ll never actually want to look at that blurry, grainy photo again.
InVisage Technologies has designed a new sensor that promises to marry the convenience of phone picture-taking with a much better quality end product. The sensor uses quantum dots in place of the silicon currently used for sensors. The dots boost light absorption efficiency up to 90 percent (from 50 percent 25 percent offered by current sensors) and increase overall performance fourfold.
Despite the advantages, the new sensors aren’t expected to cost significantly more than current generation sensors. They will be ready for manufacturers by year-end and could make their debut appearance on market handsets by the middle of next year. [via Wired]
