Can The Gevey Really Unlock Your iPhone?
By danseitz
It’s one of the eternal frustrations of the iPhone: it’s a great device…trapped on a terrible network. Much better to just take it to a carrier who cares, but, of course, the iPhone is locked to AT&T’s network. What to do?
Most people have been jailbreaking their iPhone using software exploits, but that’s risky; it can crash the phone, corrupt key elements of the software, and naturally, it voids your warranty. Besides, they haven’t cracked the new iOS yet. While you’re waiting, Gevey has come up with a way to do it using your SIM card that…well…it’s certainly different.
Essentially, the Gevey works by spoofing your SIM card, unlocking other bands for phone traffic and letting you get on the network of your choice.
The main problem is that while this may not goof with your phone’s software, you still have to do a bunch of stuff your provider will likely hate, such as cutting off the corner of your SIM card. It’s also a pretty involved process to get this thing on your network and, if your phone shuts off, you have to go through the whole process again.
Of your options, I’d wait for the inevitable jailbreaking myself. But you can buy Gevey’s solution here if you want to give it a try.
