Boxee Gets Its Own Box
By Chris Weiss
Long a favorite with Web-content junkies, Boxee has just gotten a little better. The service has long packed entertaining movie and music content of the Internet into a user friendly interface that can be viewed on a television. However, it has always been software based and required a separate computer to deliver.
In seeking to take the service to a more mainstream level, Boxee has teamed up with D-Link to cut out the middle man and serve up its very own box that can connect directly to a television. Plug it in and enjoy Internet content on your TV without any further equipment or hassle.
The funky-shaped box, which joins a field of contenders including Roku and similar features offered on game consoles, TVs and Blu-ray players, connects directly to a TV via HDMI and includes optical and analog audio outputs. It also features an ethernet port, two USB 2.0s and an SD slot. The simple interface allows you to navigate with a remote control.
Unfortunately, it appears that if your TV doesn’t have HDMI you won’t be connecting a Boxee since there are no component or composite video outputs.
Price is expected to be under $200. [via NY Times and Crunch Gear]
