Bots Bots Sent 83% of Spam Emails in June

In recent news that you could probably figure out just by opening up your email, it’s been cited that over 83.2 percent of spam sent in the month of June originated from botnets. To make the news even more discouraging, 90.4 percent of all email sent in June was spam. The statistics come from a report by Symantec’s MessageLabs. Cutwail was the largest perpetrator, responsible for over 45 percent of spam. The report also cited that many smaller botnets send emails through multiple webmail accounts appearing as real people (or as bots trying to appear as real people) and the numbers could be even grimmer than reported. So, just in case you couldn’t help wondering if Delilah and her best friend really are intrigued by what they heard about you and want to get to know you a little better: no, no they don’t. Quash that hope, my lonely friend. [via ars technica] [photo: jelene]
