Boeing P-8A Poseidon is Ready to Roll
By Jared Newman
Watch out, submarines, Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon aircraft will soon be gunning for you. Today, the Poseidon was officially unveiled with the U.S. Navy at a Boeing facility in Renton, Wash., though we’ve known about this beast for some time. The Poseidon is a modified 737-800 airplane that can attack subs and ground targets, but it’s also good for intelligence, surveillance and recon. It has greater payload capacity and communications ability than its predecessor, the Navy’s P-3C Orion aircraft, and it will go into flight testing later this year. Despite the fanfare in the United States, India will actually be the first buyer, as it’s had eight Poseidons on order since January. Patience. [via Boeing]
