AT&T Okays Sling App After It Slims Down
Sling owners can now get streamed TV and video content on their iPhone over AT&T’s 3G network. AT&T had previously rejected 3G functionality for the SlingPlayer Mobile app, limiting it to Wi Fi. A primary reason behind this decision last year was that AT&T worried that the app would congest its 3G network.
Since then, AT&T worked with Sling to cut the amount of bandwidth that the app uses to an acceptable level. So the good news is, AT&T now allows the app on its network, but the bad news is the audio and video will likely suffer as a result.
AT&T stated that it is willing to work with future app developers in the same manner, ensuring their apps work within its network without clogging it.
The updated version of the SlingPlayer Mobile app is not yet available in the App Store. The current version is one of the more expensive apps on the iPhone at $30. [via Wired and Ars Technica]
