identity theft Arrest Made in Largest Ever U.S. Credit Card Theft

46 million credit card numbers stolen? That’s nothing. Albert Gonzales, 28, of Florida, is accused of stealing 130 million credit and debit card numbers, which I’d think would be enough to live comfortably. Gonzales and two accomplices allegedly started researching ways to hack credit card systems of companies in 2006, eventually cracking companies such as 7-Eleven, Hannaford Brothers and Heartland Payment Systems, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Before that, the parent company of T.J. Maxx had its credit card system hacked for 45.7 million credit and debit card numbers, so the DOJ says the latest case shatters the old record. It’s not clear how the law caught up to Gonzales and his crew, but the result won’t likely be pretty. Gonzales is facing up to 20 years in prison. [via Ars Technica]

In my opinion Albert should be punished harshly so that an example can be set for future and it can produce deterrent effect too for other culprits.
