iPad Apple Sells More Than 300,000 IPads, 1 Million Apps on the First Day

Apple announced today that it sold 300,000 iPads as of midnight on Saturday April 3, showing a strong start for its tablet computer. The sales include deliveries of pre-orders, sales at Apple retail stores and delivery to channel partners.

According to a survey of 448 iPad buyers, the majority of early customers were loyal Apple owners. The Piper Jaffray survey found that 74 percent were Mac users and 66 percent were iPhone owners.

Apple also announced that new iPad owners downloaded more than a million apps and 250,000 e-books (iBooks?) on the first day. Users clearly didn’t waste any time putting their new purchase to work.

Due to Apple’s strong first-day showing, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray doubled his estimate of first-year iPad sales to 5.6 million. Despite the publicized flaws, it looks like the iPad is headed for success. [via PR Newswire and Fortune]
