The tech world has been in a small uproar over the past few days about Apple’s surprise turnaround on sexy apps. Last week, developers of such apps began receiving emails that Apple would be pulling the apps from the App Store if they weren’t changed to fall in line with Apple’s app policy–whatever the hell that is.

Outside of a generic email, we didn’t have any word from Apple explaining the new move. Now Apple head of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller has gone on record for a NY Times article.

Schiller offered this: “It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see.”

In explaining why certain apps like Playboy and SI Swimsuit would stay on the App Store while the rest would be pulled, Schiller stated: “The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted format.”

So, in other words, Apple stands to lose a lot of money from well-known brand names so parents and children be damned. [NY Times via TechCrunch]
