apple app store Apple Captures Grabs Over 99% of Mobile App Sales in 2009

We knew Apple had a big lead in apps, but new numbers really make it clear as day just how much the company owns the market. According to numbers from Gartner, a market research firm, Apple accounted for 99.4 % of mobile app sales in 2009. That’s kinda’ a big number.

The Gartner numbers show a 2009 app market worth $4.2 billion. In other words, Apple grabbed about 4.174 billion of those dollars and all the others were left feasting on the scraps. Apple did so by selling around 2.5 billion apps during the year–compared to about 16 million sold by other contenders.

Gartner predicts that the 2010 app market will expand to about 4.5 billion apps sold and $6.8 billion in revenue. And while other app markets such as Android are steadily expanding, Ars Technica expects Apple to continue its dominance in 2010, holding onto about 2/3 of the market–a big dip from 99+%, but still a dominant number. And that’s before taking the upcoming tablet into consideration.

So in case there was any doubt–the iPhone remains the place for apps. [via Ars Technica]
